Peter took over the family business "Savages" a general draper in the Thoroughfare in Woodbridge in 1970 and continued selling everything from sewing thread to carpets as his family had done for the last 60yrs.
As the business progressed Peter noticed a trend in customers seating requirements. The increase in sedentary jobs seemed to co-inside with more customers complaining of bad backs and needing a chair in which they could sit comfortably.
Peter was diagnosed at an early age with Ankylosing Spondylitis (inflammatory arthritis of the lower spine) and was no stranger to the importance of ergonomically designed chairs and 'sitting comfortably' he had owned a recliner for many years and was not comfortable in any other chair for long periods of time.
Traditionally the first consideration when choosing general furnishings was 'style' with little thought given to comfort - for a back sufferer a deep seat and low back could not be a worse choice, yet it looked nice.
Peter recognised a niche in the market for back sufferers, his philosophy is common sense - no two people are the same and we all suffer from different ailments. It is imperative that you choose the chair that is right for you; a 6ft gentleman is never going to find the same chair comfortable as a 5ft lady.
In 1993 needing to streamline the business due to family commitments Peter sold 'Savages'. He observed a growing trend amongst the public for shopping at 'one stop shops', retail outlets with a wide selection of one product offering the customer choice under one roof. Peter decided to specialise in recliner chairs, he relocated the business to Melton and with wife Jane started 'Anglia Recliners'.
The idea was a success and in 1995 Anglia Recliners purchased a second larger building to accommodate a wider range of furniture. A close working relationship with manufacturers like Sherborne Upholstery and La-z-boy helped with the development and design of recliners. The range increased and sofas and fixed furniture in matching sizes and styles became available.
In 2002 with the increased popularity of leather furniture the business was split between the two buildings, one specialising in leather recliners and suites and the other in fabric recliners to give customers a wider choice.
In the same year Peter's son Paul joined Anglia Recliners and took over the business when Peter and Jane retired in 2004. There have been a few changes since then, the leather showroom is now a dedicated 'Stressless Studio' featuring furniture by Ekornes made in Norway.
Our larger showroom still houses all our traditional recliners in leather and fabric, including our large selection of mobility lift and rise recliners.
